Read the Saint story with your child and have them color the picture below.

St. Pope John Paul II

Pope John Paul II (JPII) was born in Poland in 1920, with the name Karol Wojtyla.

Growing up, he was very athletic and would often play sports with his friends.

In university, Karol loved to write and act in plays, but after his father died, he decided to enter the seminary instead.

After becoming a priest at the age of 26, Karol worked in a parish and had a group of young people that he would take on hiking and kayaking trips.

In 1978, when he was only 58, Karol was elected pope and took the name John Paul II.

During his time as pope, he traveled to over 120 countries and canonized hundreds of saints.

He practiced excellence in everything he did and made a huge difference in the world.

He died on April 2, 2005, and his funeral was one of the largest in history. Over 4 million people came to say goodbye to John Paul the Great.

Connection Questions:

What is your favorite Bible story?

Why is it important to read the Bible? The Bible teaches us how to love God and others, you learn about God and how to live like Jesus, the Word of God fills us with life, it gives meaning and purpose to our lives, it helps us to become Champions for Christ, etc.

Closing Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus, help us to learn each day what it means to become a Champion for Christ. Teach us to live the great commandments: to love you with all our heart, mind and soul and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Amen.
