Mom is at center stage stirring a bowl.

Emily: Yells very excitedly as she comes running in. Mom, mom, mom!!!!

Mom: Yes, Emily? What’s going on?

Emily: Mom, I’ve figured it out. I know what I want for my birthday!!! I want a bouncy castle and a BBQ and outdoor games and I don’t want it to rain on my birthday. That’s what I want.

Mom: Well, I can’t make sure it doesn’t rain for you, but you can certainly pray and ask God for that if you want.

Emily: I’m going right now to pray and ask for a sunny day. I’m so excited! This will be the best birthday ever!

Mom: Well, you better start praying because your birthday is in three days.

Emily excitedly runs off the stage. There is a knock at the door.

Mom: Come in.

Farmer Joe walks on stage.

Joe: Good morning, Mrs. Miller.

Mom: Good morning, Farmer Joe. How are the crops out in the fields?

Joe: Not too good. Not too good. The earth is dry and the crops aren’t growing. If we don’t get rain soon we’ll have no crops to sell and no food. It’s not good, Mrs. Miller. Not good.

Mom: That’s terrible.

Joe: All the farmers are praying for rain. Especially in the next few days. It’s very important.

Mom: I see. Well, God is good and gracious. He gives us what we need.

Joe: That’s right. That’s right. Well, Mrs. Miller, it was nice chatting with you. Have a nice day.

Farmer Joe walks off.

Someone walks by saying: 3 days later.

Emily: It’s my birthday! Let’s see if it’s a sunny day. Looks out the window. Aw… it’s raining! But I prayed so much. Doesn’t God want me to have a sunny birthday?

Mom comes in.

Emily: Mom! Mom! Mom: What’s wrong, honey?

Emily: It’s raining outside! I can’t believe it. I prayed for a sunny day on my birthday.

Mom: Well, we need to be open to what God wants for us, not just what we want. Pause. That’s kind of what happened to Mary, the Mother of God.

Emily: Mary wanted a sunny birthday and she got a rainy one instead?

Mom: Laughs. No, dear. Mary set aside all her plans and chose to do God’s plans. God asked her to become the Mother of His one and only Son! You see... God honored Mary’s willingness to follow His ways. And because Mary said yes, Jesus was born. Mary had faith that God knew what was best for her.

Emily: God really knows what He’s doing, doesn’t He?

Mom: Yes, He sure does. Did you know the farmers are praying, too? The earth is too dry to grow their crops and no plants are growing in their fields. They are praying for rain. If it doesn’t rain, thousands of people will have no food to eat.

Emily: Oh, I see.

Mom: So, what do you say? Can you deal with rain on your birthday?

Emily: Sure Mom. Can we have a pajama party instead?

Mom: Sounds good to me.

Emily: Smiling. Oh, I’m so excited! We can make pizza, play games and watch movies. It’s going to be so much fun! Emily says this as they both walk off stage.

The End.
