The Gift
Characters:
- Joe
- Maddie
Props:
- Large box (wrapped in fancy paper) Tape the script to the gift box.
- Garbage can (place off to the side)
JOE: (Comes on stage with gift in hands) This is so exciting! I found this present on my doorstep addressed to me, but I have no idea who it’s from. Well, let’s see if I can guess. I bet you it’s from my aunt. She always likes to buy me stuff. I bet you it’s a harmonica. I’ve always wanted a harmonica. I could learn to play and become the world’s best harmonica player ever. But you know what would happen then? The music lady at church would find out and she would try to convince me to play it at Mass and I wouldn’t want to do that.
Wait, maybe it’s from my mom and dad! I bet they got me a new Bible, one with cool pictures and stuff. That would be cool, because then I could learn so much about Jesus and know all the scriptures. But you know what would happen then? The youth minister would find out that I got this Bible and would want me to come and speak to the other kids. I’m not sure I want to do that.
You know, I bet you it’s not any of those things. It’s probably a computer or an iPhone. Oh man, wouldn’t that be awesome? I’d listen to music on the way to school and play games on it during recess.
Oh yah, that would be so cool... But you know what would happen then? All the other kids would want to take a look at it. Next thing you know I’d have to share it again. Forget it, I don’t want to share. I’m not gonna bother opening it. Joe throws it, unopened into the garbage can and walks out.
Maddie: Walks on stage as Joe passes by to leave. As Maddie passes by the garbage can, she notices the wrapped gift.
“Hey, cool!” Maddie holds it up to an ear and gives it a gentle shake, then pauses with a curious look on her face. Maddie then lifts the lid to peek inside. (Make sure what’s inside remains a mystery to the audience.)
WOW! What an awesome gift! This is amazing. I can’t believe I just found this. I can’t wait to share it with others!
Maddie skips/dances off stage with gift.
VBS LEADER: (After the applause) Tie-in the skit to today’s theme saying, The Greatest Gift God gives to us is Jesus present in the Eucharist! Today we’re going to look at how we can prepare ourselves to recognize and receive the great gift of the Mass.
