 Catholic Resources & Tools For:

Day 3 Skit: The Party

Characters:

  • Older Brother (Enthusiastic about his faith)
  • Younger Sister (Tired of going to Mass)

(names used in script can be changed to the names of the actors)

Props:

  • Breakfast table & chairs
  • 2 cereal bowls with spoons
  • Bottle of Multi-Vitamins
  • 2 housecoats

John:  Enters stage right, wearing housecoat and meets sister, also in housecoat, eating breakfast. Good morning Anne. How was Becky’s birthday party last night?

Anne: (enthusiasticly) Hey John. It was awesome! All of my friends were there. I bought her this great present, and we sang her Happy Birthday  like 10 times! Then we had this like yummy pizza supper! I had like a lot of fun!

John: Sounds like you had a good time! Hey, it’s almost time to go to Mass. Are you ready to go?

Anne: (with attitude) Mass?! I forgot it’s Sunday today. I don’t feel like going to Mass. I don’t get anything out of it.

John:  You know, Anne, you don’t go to Mass just to get something out of it.

Anne: What do you mean?

John:  Well, why did you go to the birthday party? Just to get something out of it?

Anne: Of course not! We went because it was Becky’s birthday! We wanted to celebrate and show her how much we care about her. I bought her a gift and everything.

John:  Well, it’s kinda the same way with Mass. We go to Mass to give something to God; we give Him honor and worship. We celebrate everything He’s done for us. Look! (gesturing around) He’s given you all the good things in your life:  your family, friends... (proudly) and even me! That’s something worth celebrating!

Anne: (pretending to laugh at his joke) Ha ha, John. But it’s kinda boring. I just sit and stand there.

John:  Well, when you go to Mass, what are you doing?

Anne: I don’t do anything – I just wait for it to be over so that we can go home.

John:  Don’t you sing the songs?

Anne: Well, no… I usually don’t feel like singing.

John:  You had such a great time at the birthday party. Why did you have such a good time? Did you just sit and stand there?” No, you probably were into it, right? You were there with all your friends singing and participating.

Anne: Yeah, but that was different!

John:  (with enthusiasm & encouragement) If you want to get something out of Mass, you have to participate in it. Don’t just sit there, get involved. Get into the action! Say the prayers and sing the songs with all your heart. If you want to get something out of Mass, you’ve got to put something into it!

Anne: Yeah, I guess so.

John:  But that’s not all. The best reason to go to Mass is to receive Jesus.

Anne: Receiving Jesus... at communion? But I don’t feel anything different after communion.

John:  Grabbing the jar of vitamins off the table. Do you feel a big change when you take your vitamins?

Anne: No, but I know they’re good for me.

John:  Good. So do I. Now all you need to do is trust in what GOD says about the Eucharist. He said, “My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink... This is My Body. This is My Blood.” After the priest speaks those words, Jesus is truly present. It still looks like bread and wine, but with faith, we know it’s really Jesus.

Anne: Jesus? Really?

John:  Really! And if we receive Him with an  open and humble heart, he can change us and strengthen us from the inside out!

Anne: That’s cool! Thanks bro! Hey, we’d better get ready. Starts getting up from the table. We don’t want to be late for Mass! Exits.

John:  Eating one last spoon of cereal as he looks up and gives 2 thumbs up!

VBS LEADER: Tie in the skit with today’s theme by saying: “The Mass is a celebration! Today, at some of our stations let’s learn how we can more fully participate in this celebration!”
