Day 5 Virtue Demo: GENEROSITY
You’ll need:
-
Items to give away (ex. groceries for food bank, toys or school supplies for needy children, etc.)
Choose a local charity that you would like to support. Items may be collected in advance on a donation basis, or purchased directly from the VBS budget.
-
Collection baskets
The purpose of this demonstration is to help kids practice the concept of tithing. They can bring an item or money from home to practice generosity and to help bless others. Remind them the day before to bring their donation to give to the charity of your choice.
Ask:
Who can tell me what generosity means?
(being generous, giving things away, always being willing to help, sharing what we have with others, etc.)
What is the hardest thing you’ve ever had to give away? Answers will vary.
Leader: Share something you had to give away.
Explain:
Generosity is hard to live out because it requires action. It means we have to make sacrifices with our time, talents and treasure.
Maybe you’re thinking of being an altar server at Mass or singing in the choir. You might be a bit nervous at first, but did you know it’s actually an act of generosity? You’re making a gift of your time and talents to your parish. Or what about when your neighbor asks for help to shovel the snow off her driveway. Practicing generosity means going to help her with a joyful smile on your face.
God has been so good to all of us here at (name your parish). We thought we might be able to share some of that goodness with others. We’d like to donate (name items) to help some of the people in our city/town that are in need. The challenge is that we need your help. If you brought an item or money to donate, then you can come and place it in the baskets. Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of others.
The Bible Says: “Give generously and do so without a grudging heart; and the Lord your God will bless you.” Deut. 15:10
We give generously to others because Jesus gave everything for us. God asks us to give of our time, our talent, and especially today, our treasure to help others. Today, let’s remember to be generous and to be a light to others.
