Characters:
Kids are all approximately 11 years old.
- Eve
- Liam
- Carter (mean)
- Claire (clumsy)
- Sylvie (shy)
Props:
- Schoolbooks
- 2 Basketballs
Intro: Eve and Liam are walking to school together. Eve is holding schoolbooks and Liam has a basketball.
Eve: Hey Liam! It’s hard to believe that summer is over and here we are … first day of school already.
Liam: You know Eve… I’m kinda nervous starting 6th grade.
Eve: Why are you nervous, Liam?
Liam: I wonder if Carter will be in our class again.
He wasn’t very nice to people last year. He was a bully.
Eve: I know he has trouble in school, but that doesn’t give Carter an excuse to be mean to his classmates.
Liam: Ya, I know.
Carter walks in with his basketball
Liam: Hey Carter! How was your summer?
Carter: Why do you care? Why can’t you just leave me alone?
Carter continues walking right by them. Eve and Liam look at each other and just shake their heads. All of a sudden, Claire walks towards Carter, but trips right in front of him and her books scatter all over the floor. Carter starts getting mad and raises his hands as if he’s about to yell at her, but Eve rushes in front of him and starts talking before Carter can say anything.
Eve: Hey, Claire. Let me help you with those. Eve starts picking up the books with Claire. Don’t worry about it, accidents happen all the time.
Claire stands up with a big smile on her face
Claire: Thanks Eve, I really appreciate it.
Claire walks away and Liam pats Carter on the back.
Liam: It was just an accident. You shouldn’t be too hard on Claire.
Carter: Ya whatever. Carter walks away.
Liam: Thanks for stepping in like that Eve. That could’ve gotten a lot worse. Liam bounces his basketball a few times.
Sylvie walks in slowly, hands in pockets, head down.
Eve: Hey Sylvie. How’s it going?
Sylvie: Shakes her head. It’s the first day of school and Carter’s already saying some really mean things to me. He keeps telling people that I cheat and that’s why I have such good grades. He wishes I didn’t come to this school.
Carter walks by.
Carter: (In a mean, mocking sort of tone) Hey Sylvie… the teachers didn’t kick you out of school yet?
Sylvie looks at the ground.
Liam: Steps out in front of Sylvie. That’s enough Carter.
Carter just shakes his head and stomps off.
Sylvie: Thanks Liam! I know I shouldn’t let him push me around like that, but sometimes I just get scared.
Liam: You should talk to your teachers if Carter keeps acting like that.
Eve: Our dad always tells us that we should pray for those who aren’t being kind, and to ask Jesus and Mary to be with us.
Sylvie: That’s a good idea, Eve. Thanks.
Sylvie walks away with a smile on her face.
Eve: Looks at Liam. We’d better get to class now or we’re going to be late.
Carter walks back on without his basketball and they all start walking back to class together.
Liam: Hey Carter, I’m having a birthday party next weekend, and we are all going to the movies. Do you want to come? Bounces the basketball towards Carter.
Carter: Catches the basketball. Seriously? Why would you want to invite me?
Liam: Pats him on the back. Well, why not? Besides, I’d really like to be your buddy.
Carter smiles and bounces the ball back to Liam.
Carter: Thanks, Liam. I’d like that!
They walk off the stage together.

DAY 3 Optional Skit: THE RIGHT MOVE
Written by Sue Spitz © Cat.Chat Productions
Duration: Approx. 5 minutes
Characters: (all except Mom look about 9-10 years old)
- Eve
- Liam
- Carter
- Jacob
- Three additional children (boys or girls)
- Mom
Props:
- Soccer ball
- Four cones (two used for each soccer goal)
- Bench or two chairs next to each other
- Set of crutches
- Three backpacks/book bags
- Mom’s purse
- Bell/horn
Four children (Carter and the three additional children) are on the stage gently kicking a soccer ball around. A boy (Jacob) is sitting on a bench near the soccer area, looking sad and alone. His crutches and backpack are next to him. Eve and Liam enter the stage. They are walking to school with their backpacks on.
Liam: Wow, Eve, it’s the first day of school. I can’t believe that we’re in fourth grade now.
Eve: I know. It seems like we’re growing up fast.
Liam: Hey, look, Eve. Some kids are playing soccer before the school bell rings. Let’s join in.
Liam and Eve run to the field, dropping their backpacks along the way.
Liam: Hey Carter, I know there’s only a few more minutes left before the bell rings, but can we join in?
Carter: Well, I guess so. Let me think about how I want to divide us into teams.
As Carter is looking at the kids and thinking, Eve notices a boy (Jacob) sitting on a bench.
Eve: Liam, there’s a new kid sitting on the bench over there. Let’s go see if he wants to join in, too.
The twins walk over to the bench where Jacob is sitting.
Liam: Hi! You’re new to our school. What’s your name? Do you want to play with us?
Jacob: My name is Jacob. I can’t play, see? (pulls out his crutches) I can’t run like you guys.
Eve: That’s okay…do you want to give it a try?
Carter walks over to Liam, Eve, and Jacob.
Carter: Wait, if he can’t run, he’s on your team! I don’t want him on our team!
Eve: (enthusiastically) Yeah, we’ll take Jacob! In fact, we’ll be our OWN team.
Carter: Fine! Watch us beat you! The bell is going to ring in a minute, so first team that scores, wins.
Liam, Eve, and Jacob are on one team while Carter and the other three kids form the other team.
Eve: Jacob, since you can’t move too much, do you want to be the goalie?
Jacob: Sure! (moves on his crutches next to the goal)
The kids start “playing” soccer by gently passing the ball and “trying” to score. Neither team is able to kick the ball through the cones. Finally, Carter gets the ball and charges toward Jacob and the goal.
Carter: You’d better watch out, Jacob. I’m going to score big with this kick!
Jacob hobbles on his crutches to the front of the goal. He puts one of his crutches out to hopefully block the shot. Meanwhile, as Carter dribbles the ball toward the goal, he looks around to see who is watching him score the winning goal.
Carter: (with a boastful tone) Everybody watch me, the greatest soccer player ever, score the winning goal!
Carter doesn’t see Jacob’s crutch and trips over it. The ball is now free, and Liam gets it.
Liam: Eve, move over there! (points to a space where there are no people on the field. Eve moves and Liam passes the ball to her. Eve dribbles to the other side and kicks the ball into the goal, scoring for her team. The school bell rings.)
Liam: Good job, team!Carter: (looking at Eve) Your goal was just LUCKY!Eve: No….actually, we all played a part in the score. Thanks, Jacob. Thanks, Liam.
The kids pick up their backpacks.
Liam: Here, Jacob, I can carry your backpack for you.
Jacob: Thanks!
Everyone walks off the stage to school…
It is now after school. Mom walks on stage holding her purse.
Mom (looking at her watch) I can’t believe that the first day of school is over. I hope the kids had a good day. They should be out at any minute.
The bell rings. Liam and Eve walk on to the stage, holding their backpacks.
Liam: Hi Mom! Thanks for coming to pick us up.Mom: How was your day, kids? Liam: It was great! I really liked recess and lunch. Oh, my classes and my teacher are great, too.
Eve: (waving a piece of paper with a smiling face on it) I got a Happy Note from my teacher today!
Mom: Really…why?
Eve: Because of my act of kindness to a new boy at school. You see, Mom, there was a boy named Jacob who was on crutches. He was sitting alone on a bench. I don’t think the other kids asked him to play soccer, because he looked very sad. I invited him to play. And you know what? He actually helped Liam and I score the winning goal!
Mom: Wow, Eve, it is wonderful that you felt moved to reach out to Jacob. Do you remember how Jesus was nice to people? He cared very deeply for the sick, the suffering, and those that were teased by other people. Today you acted like Jesus did. I am very proud of you.
Eve: (smiles) Thanks, Mom.
Mom: You know what kids, let’s go get some ice cream to celebrate your first day of school. And how about an extra scoop for your act of kindness?
Liam: Yay! I want chocolate with gummy bears!
Eve: I’ll have the Pink Peppermint with sprinkles!
Everyone walks off stage holding hands.
