Helpful Hints
- We have provided you with multiple games to choose from each day. Select two to three games each day that best suit your VBS needs. (Age, group size, outdoor vs. indoor games, etc.)
- Download the VBS music to play at your station, along with all the printables you need for the games you’ve selected. Additional game options are also available in the digital program.
- Have your leaders help organize teams, set out supplies, monitor safety, and distribute prizes. This way, you can focus on leading the games.
- Use masking tape, rope, plastic orange safety cones to establish start and finish lines and for marking boundaries in your games area.
- Store your supplies close to the activity area for easy set-up and clean up each day.
- Make sure a first aid kit and extra water are available at your station.
- Play VBS music while kids play games. Use the playlist in the digital program.
- You can give Great Journey coins (PDF) as a reward for winning a game, for participating in activities, cleaning up, etc. Children can redeem the coins for cool prizes at your games station and/or at the closing party.
- Set up a prize table at your games station with small candy and toy prizes.
- On Day 5, you can repeat a few favorite games of the week.
- When working with younger kids (ages 4-5), be sure to remember that they have a very short attention span. They may need to change activities a lot quicker than older children.
- Greet the kids with big happy smiles and get to know them by name.
Presenting a game:
- Name the game and briefly share the theme or virtue connection.
- Explain the game rules using clear and precise instructions.
- Do a demonstration of the game with some of your games leaders.
- Get the groups in desired formation quickly.
- Ask if anyone has questions, then begin playing the game.
- Stop the game when necessary to clarify rules or correct misunderstandings.
- Remember: Have fun and encourage good sportsmanship!
