St. John the Baptist
John’s parents were Elizabeth and Zechariah.
They were in their old age when the Angel Gabriel told Zechariah that his wife was expecting a child.
Elizabeth and Mary (Jesus’ mother) were cousins and both pregnant around the same time.
Mary went on a journey to visit her cousin. At Mary’s arrival, Baby John leapt for joy in Elizabeth’s womb.
When John was around 30 years old, he was courageous and went around baptizing people and preaching that “the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.”
One day, while he was baptizing in the Jordan River, Jesus came and asked to be baptized. As soon as John did this, the sky opened up and a loud voice came from heaven saying, “This is Jesus, my beloved son, of whom I am well pleased.”
Later, John was thrown in prison for preaching to King Herod. He was then beheaded, and his body was placed in a tomb.
St. John the Baptist, Pray for us.

Answers will vary: priest poured water over the baby’s forehead, the baby was wearing a baptismal gown, the parents and godparents were with the baby, one of the godparents lit a candle, the priest blessed the baby with holy oil…

Why do we have godparents?
"Godparents have the great responsibility to be examples of Jesus to us and see that we stay faithful to God and grow in our Catholic faith”. CCC#1255
Your child can fill out this letter and send it to a godparent.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus, thank you for baptizing us with the water of life and for sending us your Holy Spirit.
Give us the courage we need to follow you each day and live out our baptismal promises. Amen.
