Day 4 Virtue Demo: Love

You’ll need:

  • 2 pitchers filled with water
  • 3 cups (small, medium, large)
  • Large bucket

Explain:

Our virtue today is Charity. Charity means love. It means loving God, and loving others as well.

I’m going to do a little demonstration about love using these pitchers of water.

Demonstrate:

Hold a small empty cup in one hand and a pitcher of water in the other hand.

God’s love is like this water, and these cups represent our hearts.

What will happen if I try pouring this entire pitcher of water into this small cup? (It will spill over, overflow, etc...)

Pour lots of water into the smallest cup till it spills over into the large bucket.

This is like God’s love for us. He wants to fill our hearts with so much love for him, but He can’t do that if we only give him a tiny part of our hearts.

Place the cup of water on the table. Hold a medium-size empty cup UPSIDE DOWN in one hand and a pitcher of water in the other hand.

Ask:

What happens if I try pouring water into this cup? (It will fall into the bucket or on the floor) Will the cup get filled up? (No, it will be empty)

Pour the water over the UPSIDE DOWN cup.

That’s what can happen if we turn our hearts away from God. Our hearts will be empty. God loves us so much that He will never stop trying to pour His love unto us, but we have to open our hearts if we want to be filled up completely with His love.

Set the upside down cup aside on the table. Take the largest cup and hold it upright.

The more we give of our hearts to God, just like this big cup, the more God’s love can come pouring in. Fill it with water till it’s overflowing.

Explain:

The more we get a taste of God’s love, the more we thirst for it. He wants to give us as much love as He can, but it all depends on how much we open our hearts to receive that love. And the cool thing is that the more love we have in our hearts, the more we are able to share it with others.

So charity means loving God with all our hearts, and then sharing that love with everyone we meet.

Sprinkle some water on the kids or for a fun surprise, dunk a cup of water on a leader.
