As we begin our journey through the month of May, I think it’s important for us to start with our Blessed Mother. One of the best ways to build a relationship with Mary is by consecrating ourselves to her. You may have already done this before, or perhaps you’ve heard of it, but never understood the need. Regardless of your initial thoughts, I’m here to let you know that it just might be the thing you’ve been looking for to rocket launch your spiritual life to a whole new level.
Here are a few reasons why you should consider consecrating yourself to Jesus through Mary.
Jesus wants us to
When Jesus was on the cross, it says in scripture, "When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your Son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” In doing that, Jesus was giving Mary as a mother for us all.
When you love your mother, then you want to see other people come to love and honor her as well. When we consecrate ourselves to her, we are essentially saying, “Mary, I want you as my mother. Take me closer and closer to your son Jesus.”
“Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.” -St. Maximilian Kolbe
It is the quickest and easiest way to get to Jesus
St. Louis de Montfort wrote that Mary is “the safest, easiest, shortest and most perfect way of approaching Jesus.” If the goal is to draw closer to Christ and get to heaven, I don’t see why we wouldn’t want to take the best route there.

Many great saints did it
John Paul II, Maximillian Kolbe, Therese of Lisieux, Padre Pio... these are just a handful of saints who had incredibly close relationships with our Mother Mary. I don’t know about you, but if some of the greatest saints in the Church knew it was important, then I’m going to follow their example.

How do we do it?
Some of you may have heard of the book, 33 Days to Morning Glory by Fr. Michael Gaitley. It is a simple, yet powerful way to consecrate yourself to Jesus through Mary. All it takes is reading a short reflection every day and praying a prayer at the end. You could also read St. Louis de Montfort’s book, True Devotion. It has led countless people into a closer relationship with Mary and has helped transform ordinary men and women into great saints.
