Story Behind New Cat.Chat Song
"Ordinary"
Last September, I wrote a song called Ordinary for our new Great Journey With Jesus VBS program. Day 3 of the program focuses on the season of Ordinary Time in the church year. We are presently in the season of Ordinary Time and it's easy to overlook how special it truly is.
The goal of writing this song was to help remind kids that we can find opportunities to grow in holiness through the ordinary and mundane routines of our day. In this season, we’re invited to live out the everyday moments of our faith, not in grand gestures but in the small, routine actions that make up our lives. This certainly applies not only to kids, but to us adults as well.
Whether that’s through simple acts of kindness such as making your spouse a cup of coffee, calling up a friend, doing laundry, unplugging a tub drain, changing a tire or a diaper and so much more. When we do these ordinary things for the glory of God they become extraordinary moments where beautiful grace abounds.
It’s the season when life feels a little more normal, without the intensity of big celebrations like Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter.
It's also a time to reflect on what’s important in life, such as the gift of a new day, our health, our faith and our relationships. For me, I am so grateful when my wife Denise and I intentionally try to be present with those closest to us, such as our kids and our six grand kids.
So, take a breath and appreciate the quiet rhythm of this season. It’s a time to reconnect with our Lord in the little things that make up our lives and rediscover the grace that’s always been there.
There’s beauty in the simplicity and the mundane, and sometimes, that’s exactly what makes life so EXTRAORDINARY.
So when you see your priest wearing the colour green at Mass on Sunday, let it be a reminder that "green is the colour of new life", new life in Christ. And just as the lyrics in this song say: "Green means Go", we should also go and make Ordinary time a season to move forward towards becoming a Saint.
