Where does our 'Power' come from as Catholics?
2 ways to prepare for Pentecost Sunday
I was recently reflecting on my first real encounter with 'Power'—a moment that took place when I was in my early twenties.
I had been attending a gathering of young people and noticed how passionate they were about their faith. It struck me—these guys and girls, my age, were genuinely devoted, and it showed.
After a few weeks of hanging out and joining these Friday night gatherings, I was prayed over. Within just a few moments of my friends praying with me, I was completely overwhelmed. A powerful wave of love, peace, and an intense desire to seek the Truth washed over me. I began to weep—not out of pain or regret, but because I was deeply moved by the presence of God.
From that day forward, I committed my life to learning about and living for Jesus. Experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit that evening changed the trajectory of my life. I remember going home late and reading the book of Acts until 4 in the morning. That kind of hunger for the Word wasn’t something I’d ever imagined having... It stirred something powerful in me.
It's a source of knowledge, guidance, and healing,
capable of shaping individuals and communities."
The Catechism of the Catholic Church
After 33 years of growing in my faith, and still learning, I have experienced the:
- Power of the Word of God. Reading the Word of God is part of my daily morning prayer.
- Power of praying the name of Jesus. When the trials of life, hard seasons and moments of discouragement come, as they often do, I simply repeat the name of Jesus over and over.
"The Holy Name of Jesus is, first of all,
an all-powerful prayer."
Bl. Henry Suso
- Power of calling on the Holy Spirit. When I need inspiration, wisdom and patience, Come Holy Spirit is my repetitive prayer.
and gives us strength…
As the soul is the life of the body,
so the Holy Spirit is the life of our souls.”
St. Peter Damian

Power comes when we call on the Holy Spirit.

Glory to Glory, the joy of His unfailing love.
Glory to Glory, from here on earth to heaven above
He was hailed as King, He was mocked as King but then Christ was risen as King of all.

Setting my mind on heavenly things, this is my hope and why I sing
Setting my mind on heavenly things, this is my hope, the joy it brings
Setting our minds on heavenly things, this is our hope and why we sing

There is power in the resurrection, power in the ascension.
Power comes when we call on the Holy Spirit.
Power in the name of Jesus, power in the Word of God.
Power comes when we call on the Holy Spirit.
